Why Learning in Community Makes Better Therapists
As therapists, we're lifelong learners.
We attend trainings, earn continuing education credits, read books, listen to podcasts, and stay curious because we want to provide the best care possible for our clients.
But when you think back on the trainings that have shaped you the most, chances are you don't remember every slide or every research study.
You probably remember the conversations.
The questions someone else asked that made you think differently.
The case consultation that shifted your perspective.
The laughter over lunch.
The colleague you still keep in touch with years later.
The most meaningful learning often happens in community.
Learning Is More Than Receiving Information
Continuing education is an important part of being a therapist.
It keeps us current, expands our clinical skills, and challenges us to keep growing.
But learning isn't just about gathering information.
It's about making meaning of that information.
That process often happens through conversation, reflection, curiosity, and hearing perspectives that are different from our own.
We Learn From Each Other
Every therapist brings a unique lens to the room.
Our lived experiences, specialties, clinical styles, and client populations all shape the way we practice.
When we learn in community, we're exposed to ideas we may never have considered on our own.
Someone else's question may spark a new way of approaching a case.
A colleague's experience may help us better understand our own.
Learning becomes something we create together, not something we simply receive.
Community Creates Psychological Safety
Some of our biggest moments of growth happen when we're willing to say:
"I'm not sure."
"I've never worked with this before."
"I could use another perspective."
Those conversations require trust.
When learning takes place in a supportive community, we're more likely to ask questions, challenge our assumptions, and admit what we don't know.
That's where meaningful growth happens.
Not because we have all the answers, but because we're willing to stay curious together.
Connection Helps Learning Stick
Think about the trainings you've attended over the years.
Which ones do you still think about?
For many of us, it's not because the slides were memorable.
It's because the experience was.
We tend to remember the conversations, the stories, the shared laughter, and the moments that helped us see something in a new way.
Learning becomes more meaningful when it connects not only to our minds, but also to our relationships.
Community Supports More Than Clinical Growth
Learning in community doesn't just make us better clinicians.
It also reminds us that we're not alone.
Therapy can be deeply rewarding work, but it can also be isolating.
Spending time with other therapists creates space to exchange ideas, normalize challenges, celebrate successes, and remember that we don't have to carry this work by ourselves.
Sometimes the greatest takeaway from a training isn't a new intervention.
It's realizing that someone else has been asking the same questions you have.
Creating Spaces to Learn Together
This belief is at the heart of everything I create.
Whether it's an EMDR consultation group, a free community event, or the Rooted in Connection retreat, my goal isn't simply to teach information.
It's to create spaces where therapists can learn with one another.
Where curiosity is welcomed.
Where questions are encouraged.
Where conversations continue long after the presentation ends.
Because meaningful learning isn't just about earning continuing education hours.
It's about building relationships, expanding perspectives, and growing alongside other therapists.
